Who Are We?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World is a review website that provides authentic, well-researched, and reliable information for everything related to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Me and my husband Andrew started this platform to translate our love for and expertise in martial arts into a valuable resource for the BJJ community.
I am Mimi, the owner of Sydney Microblading Brow Bar and a blue belt BJJ trainee for 5 years. From my birth and upbringing in Vietnam to a move to Sydney, I have ventured on a life-altering journey through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
From my very experience of Taekwondo at the tender age of 8 years, I discovered my love for the martial arts. Although I stopped practising Taekwondo, I knew I could combat and grapple for the rest of my life.
Many years since then, I moved to Sydney. At first, I dreaded this change to a completely new country. It brought many inconveniences, both mental and physical.
I could not speak proper English, and I could not make any friends. Subsequently, my self-esteem dwindled. Even after desperately trying to learn something new and build me up again, I failed.
While I struggled to adjust to the change, a friend invited me to a BJJ training centre.
This was where my life truly changed for the better.
Right from the very first class, I was in love with BJJ. Since then, I have metamorphosed into an independent, confident, and strong-willed person. I am not afraid to deal with eve-teasers and pestering men, as I used to.
In essence, I owe everything in my life to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and I built this portal to give back to the community.
What has Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu given me as a person?
Self-defence is only one of the many things I have learned as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athlete. My practice has equipped me with ample confidence, discipline, and focus. I am completely changed from who I was before my BJJ training.
Growing up as an introvert, I was always reluctant to speak out my heart or take a stand. Leaving my home to shift to Sydney only heightened my inhibitions. I could not speak decent English and was teased for it.
I had no friends and constantly stood up by the few people I talked to about it. I never stood up for myself and often faced sexual harassment at the hands of men.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu completely wiped off this side of me. I could see a positive change after only a month of practising BJJ. My training made me tough and resilient, both from the inside and the outside.
Today, I can deal with any number of men who try to assault me. From a self-loathing individual to a strong and liberated woman, I love what BJJ has done for me.
From my experience, I can give only one piece of advice to everyone reading this: start practising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as early as possible. I want to tell all parents that admitting their children to BJJ training is the best gift you can give them.
Kids Jiu-Jitsu teaches children some quintessential values of respect and resilience. Besides strengthening their disciplined ethic and focus, BJJ equips them with higher confidence.
Besides, it allows children to engage in healthy competition and push themselves towards excellence.
